Yusuke Anami is a Professor of modern Chinese political history and contemporary Chinese politics at Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan. His main research topic is the militarization of local societies in China from the mid-19th century, and how that affected the outcome of the Chinese Revolution. He believes that it is crucial to reexamine the process of nation-state building in modern China in order to understand contemporary Chinese politics. He has published one book on this topic in Japanese (The Chinese Revolution and the Red Army: The Reality behind the Revolutionary Saga of Guangdong Province. Tokyo: Keio University Press, 2012). The records of his fieldwork in China and information about his other publications can be found on his home page.
