Nguyen Vu Hoang received his Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of Toronto in 2017. His dissertation is focused on Vietnamese Americans and their relations with the homeland. He is currently a faculty member and vice-dean of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Previously, he was with the Institute of Cultural Studies (2019-2020) and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (2005-2019) at the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences.
Hoang received a Master’s Degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 2007. For his Master’s thesis, he investigated the impact of the urbanization process on residents in Hanoi, Vietnam. Hoang worked at the Department of Southeast Asian Studies at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (VME), specializing in Indonesia and Brunei. He has conducted fieldtrips to Indonesia and Brunei to study and collect cultural artifacts for the Opening Exhibition of the Southeast Asian Building of the VME (2013).
He is now interested in collaborating with international scholars specializing in diaspora and transnational studies. He has also extended his research focus to lifestyles and community relations in Soviet-style collective quarters in Hanoi, for which, he just has a co-authored book chapter in 2023.
