Xu Jian
徐堅

Xu Jian is a Professor of archaeology and art history at the Department of History, Sun Yat-sen University, China. He received his Ph.D. from Peking University in 2000. He was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Bard College from 2005-06, a Hermes Fellow at Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in 2008, and an Exchange Professor at Soka University in 2014. His research interests include methods and theories in archaeology, history of archaeology, the Bronze Age in East Asia and Southeast Asia, new museology, and heritage studies. His books include Alternative Traditions in Pre-1949 Chinese Archaeology (Beijing: Science Press, 2012), Bronze Weapons before the Eastern Zhou: a Material Culture Study (Shanghai: Shanghai Classic Press, 2014), and Great Foundations: an Intellectual History of Early Chinese Museums (Beijing: Science Press, 2016). His present research at HYI will focus on comparative studies of upland archaeology in Southwest China, mainland Southeast Asia and the Andes.
