Noriko Unno-Yamazaki

Having obtained her B. A. and M. A. in Asian Area Studies from the University of Tokyo, Noriko Unno-Yamazaki is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Tokyo. Her research interests include the modern history of Central Eurasia, minority studies, and anthropological discourses over ethnicity and religion. Her doctoral dissertation examines the social history of Chinese Muslims in the early twentieth century, with a particular focus on their debates surrounding ethnicity and faith, educational reforms, and intellectual activities in relation to how they expressed ethnicity in their daily lives. She has also traced networks of Muslim activity that connected China, Central Asia, Russia, India and the Ottoman Empire from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Her latest work, “Abdürreşid İbrahim’s Journey to China: Muslim Communities in the Late Qing as Seen by a Russian-Tatar Intellectual,” is published in Central Asian Survey. 33(3), 405-420, 2014.
