Chen Chih-Jou

Chih-Jou Jay Chen is an Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of Sociology at Academia Sinica, a jointly appointed Associate Professor at National Tsing-Hua University, and an adjunct Associate Professor at National Taiwan University. He served as Director of the Center for Contemporary China, National Tsing Hua University from 2007-12. He received his B.A. from National Taiwan University and his Ph.D. in Sociology from Duke University. Dr. Chen’s research interests include local institutions, social capital, social stratification, cross-Strait relations, and popular protests in China. He is the author of Transforming Rural China: How Local Institutions Shape Property Rights in China (Routledge, 2004), and the co-editor of Social Capital and Its Institutional Contingency: A Study of the United States, China and Taiwan (Routledge, 2013). His research project at HYI examined popular protests and changing state-society relations in contemporary China.
