He Xu is a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Before entering Fudan University, she spent 6 years in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Wuhan University and received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees there. It was during her study of political theory at Wuhan that her interest in social development and modernity grew. She is now researching social changes in rural China following market reform. By exploring the daily life of villagers, she expects to find moral meanings of community life through the interpretation of collective actions and grassroots societies. She is also interested in the relationship between market reform and the autonomy of rural society. As part of this research she has spent over four months conducting fieldwork in a small village in Wenzhou.
