Billy K. L. So is currently Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong and Professor Emeritus in the Humanities at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He served as Vice Rector (Student Affairs) and Chair Professor of History at the University of Macau (2019–2022), Chair Professor of Humanities at HKUST (2011–2019), and Chair Professor of History and Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (1993–2011). His research interests are in the areas of Chinese economic history and comparative history of law and business. His sole- and co-authored publications include Prosperity, Region, and Institutions in Maritime China (Harvard, 2000) as well as journal articles and book chapters that appear in T’oung PaoThe Bulletin of SOAS, and The Cambridge Economic History of China Volume 1, among others. He has also edited and co-edited several volumes including The Treaty Port Economy in Modern China (IEAS, UC Berkeley, 2011).
