Hao Tianhu
郝田虎

Hao Tianhu is a Qiushi Distinguished Professor and director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Zhejiang University, China. He received his Ph.D. degree in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University in 2006. Before joining Zhejiang University in 2016, he taught at Peking University for a decade. He specializes in early modern English literature, comparative literature, and manuscript study. In charge of a top-level national research project on Milton, he is the editor of three book series for Zhejiang University Press: Medieval and Renaissance Translation Series, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and Renaissance Studies. He has been a visiting scholar to Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece and Roma Tre University, Italy. He serves on the editorial board of Milton Quarterly and Multicultural Shakespeare and has been an Executive Committee member of the Milton Society of America (2021-23). During his stay as a visiting scholar at Harvard-Yenching Institute, he will work on his project “Shakespeare, Yenching University, and the Rise of Huaju.”

Hao’s English essays have appeared in such venues as ANQ, Comparative Literature Studies, European Review, The Library, Milton Quarterly, Milton Studies, Multicultural Shakespeare, Neohelicon, A New Companion to Milton, Spenser Studies, Studies in Bibliography, and Style. In addition to many Chinese articles, he has published three Chinese monographs: “Hesperides, or the Muses’ Garden”: A Study of an Early Modern English Commonplace Book (Peking University Press, 2014; Second Prize winner of a national research award), Milton in China (Zhejiang University Press, 2020), and Essays on Early English Literature and Comparative Literature (Nanjing University Press, 2022). Hao’s English monograph Commonplace Reading and Writing in Early Modern England and Beyond is forthcoming with Routledge. His translations include Martin Bernal’s Black Athena vol. 1 (2011, 2020), David Kastan’s Shakespeare and the Book (2012), and Hao Ping’s John Leighton Stuart and China, the last published by Routledge in two volumes, John Leighton Stuart’s Missionary-Educator’s Career in China and John Leighton Stuart’s Political Career in China (2018).
