Congratulations to our alumni on their recent honors, promotions, and publications!

Tianhu Hao (Visiting Scholar, 2023-24) is author of Commonplace Reading and Writing in Early Modern England and Beyond (Routledge, 2023). He is also author of the article “Shakespeare’s and Milton’s Impact on Chinese Literature and Culture: A Preliminary Comparison” in Milton Studies 65.1 (2023). He is co-author (with Wang Yuying) of “SF Impulses in Milton’s Paradise Lost” in Journal of Zhejiang University (Humanities and Social Sciences), no. 10, 2023 and co-author (with William Baker) of the article “Aubrey de Vere’s Political Passions in his Sonnet on Milton Annotated by Landor” in Style 57.4 (2023).

Nishit Kumar (HYI Chinese Studies in India Visiting Fellow, 2019-20) is author of the book chapter “Chinese Presence in the United Nations: Implications for India” in India and UN in Changing Global Order (Surabhi Gupta and Vinay Kaura, eds.).

Lee Soomi (Visiting Fellow, 2002-03) did a general project plan for the special exhibition “Wise and Unbiased: Royal Philosophy in Paintings and Calligraphy of the Joseon Dynasty” at the National Museum of Korea in Seoul. The exhibit will run from December 8, 2023 to March 10, 2024. It focuses on the utilization of the power of text and images by King Yeongjo and King Jeongjo as they worked to forge an impartial and harmonious society.

Roger Shih-Chieh Lo (Visiting Scholar, 2019-20) is author of the articles “地方菁英如何應對兵災?以1924年江浙戰爭的溫州戰場為中心” (“Civil War Politics in Twentieth-Century China: Local elites’ War Mediation in 1924 Wenzhou, Zhejiang”) in The Journal of History, NCCU 政治大學歷史學報, and “地方政治中的軍統:以20世紀上半葉的福州救火會與閩北站為中心” (“The Secret Service and Local Politics: A Case Study of the Fuzhou Firefighter Association and the Bureau of Investigation Statistics (Military Commission) in Northern Fujian Province (1890-1952)” in Historical Inquiry 臺大歷史學報.

Michelle Miao (Visiting Scholar, 2019-20) is author of the “The Unimpactful Counsel: A Study of the Sentencing of Death-eligible Drug offenders in China” (SSRN Research Paper Series, 2023) and “Why Public Opinion on the Death Penalty Doesn’t Matter in China” (Australian Journal of Asian Law, 2023).

Hoang-Yen Nguyen (Visiting Scholar, 2020-21) is author of the chapter “王实甫《西厢记》越南流传之考述” (A Study on the Dissemination of Wang Shifu’s “Romance of the West Chamber” in Vietnam) in 中越书籍交流论集 (A Collection of Research on Sino-Vietnamese Book Exchange) (Liu Yujun, ed.), Chengdu: Bashu Publishing House 巴蜀书社,2023.

Tinnaphop Sinsomboonthong (NUS-HYI Joint Doctoral Fellow, 2023-27) will be a Visiting Fellow of the Sydney Social Sciences and Humanities Advanced Research Centre (SSSHARC) at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the University of Sydney, from February-March 2024.

Dadui Yao (Visiting Fellow, 2011-12) is author of the journal article “Natural Theology and Neo-Confucianism in Timothy Richard and Ren Tingxu’s Translation of Alexander Pope’s An Essay on Man” in Religions 2023, 14(9) (Special Issue on History and Theology of Chinese Christianity).

Yoo Jaebin (Visiting Fellow, 2012-13) is author of 정조와 궁중회화 : 문예군주 정조, 그림으로 나라를 다스리다 (King Jeongjo and Court Paintings: The Literary Monarch Who Ruled through Art), October 2022. The book was awarded the “2023 Excellent Academic Publication” by The National Academy of Sciences of Korea (대한민국학술원 우수학술도서).
