Caleb Carter is an associate professor of Japanese religions and Buddhist studies at Kyushu University. He received his Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies from the Asian Languages and Cultures Department at UCLA. His recent book, A Path into the Mountains: Shugendō and Mount Togakushi (University of Hawai’i Press, 2022), traces the historical formation of Japan’s mountain tradition of Shugendō from the thirteenth through eighteenth centuries. At the Harvard-Yenching Institute, Carter is conducting research on his next project, religion and secularity in the birth of modern mountaineering in Japan.
