HYI Working Paper Series: Xu Yongming
Abstract: There are approximately 3,200 writers represented in The Complete Prose of the Yuan. Among them, 1,794 are identified by their native place. This paper provides a visual presentation of the geographical distribution of these writers. The results of data analyses and map visualization indicate that the majority of authors in The Complete Prose of the Yuan were either from key hinterland areas under the jurisdiction of the Secretariat (Zhongshu sheng) or were natives of provinces around Lin’an (modern Hangzhou), the capital of the Southern Song. Those in the former group are mainly from Shandong, Hebei, Shanxi, and Henan provinces; members of the latter group are concentrated in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Anhui, and Jiangsu. Zhejiang ranks first with 347 authors. Looking further at Zhejiang authors’ geographical distribution, the top six counties (from highest to lowest) are Hangzhou, Ningbo, Huzhou, Pujiang, Yongkang, and Pingyang. Geographical visualization of The Complete Prose of the Yuan not only provides us with an explicit look at author distribution, but also provides a more accurate view of the collection as a whole.
