The Harvard-Yenching Institute is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Professor Chikamoto Kensuke on February 18, 2023. Professor Chikamoto was a Harvard-Yenching Institute Visiting Scholar from 2016-17.
While at HYI during the 2016-17 year, Professor Chikamoto was an active participant in HYI’s activities, as the photos below attest. He was also a congenial collaborator. Harvard faculty colleagues in his field, including Ryuichi Abe, Melissa McCormick, James Robson, and Rachel Saunders had ongoing collaborative projects with Professor Chikamoto.
During his stay at HYI, and later as a HYI alumnus, Professor Chikamoto organized several conferences and workshops. We have included their programs here:
- New Horizons In Research on the Contents Inside of East Asian Statues
- The Forefront of Japanese Religious Studies
- Engi and Sutra Burial – the decoration of sacred mountains in Japan: A New look at the peripheries of medieval Japanese Buddhism
- The Time-Capsule Prince: The Sedgwick “Shōtoku Taishi At Age Two” and the Horizons of Medieval Japanese Religious Art
He will be greatly missed. The Institute expresses its condolences to Professor Chikamoto’s family, friends, and colleagues in Japan and throughout the world.
