Chang-Min Yu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at National Taiwan University. His articles have appeared in Quarterly Review of Film and Video, NECSUS: European Journal of Media Studies, Journal of Chinese Cinemas, positions: asia critique, and many other journals and edited collections. He was a visiting fellow at Kyoto University and is currently a Harvard-Yenching Visiting Scholar. The presentation today comes from his manuscript-in-progress Modernism Disclaimed: Taiwanese Film Historiography Before City of Sadness, in which he analyzes and contextualizes how Taiwanese cultural elites argue about how to write film history and mobilize modernist techniques as well as thematize modernization consequences in avant-garde shorts, feature films, documentaries, and television productions in a complicated, highly repressive cultural market of the Nationalist regime. These debates about modernism are essential to the entanglement of Sinophone identities and emergent forms of Taiwanese consciousness on screen.
