Chong Ming is research professor of politics at East China Normal University in Shanghai. His research focuses on the history of western modern political thought. Particular interests include French liberalism from Montesquieu to Tocqueville, the political thought of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, contemporary French political philosophy, history of French Modern politics, and the history of Christian political thought in modern west and in China. He is the author of Create Liberty: Tocqueville’s Reflections on Democracy (Shanghai Sanlian, 2014). He received his BA in history from Nanjing University (1996), MA (1999) and Ph. D. (2003) in history from Peking University. He studied at Regent College in Canada in 2001, did postdoctoral research at École Normale Supérieure, Rue d’Ulm from 2003 to 2005, and was a visiting scholar at the Centre d’Études Politiques et Sociologiques Raymond Aron, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. During his stay at the Harvard-Yenching Institute, Professor Chong will work on a project on the relationship between Christianity and liberal democracy.
