Nguyen Quang Dung was born in Hoi An City, Vietnam. He obtained his B.A. in Oriental Studies from Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City, and worked there as a research assistant at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies. In 2007, he won a scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation to study in the Southeast Asian Studies M.A. Program at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. He went on to complete his doctorate at National University of Singapore, on a HYI-NUS Joint Doctoral Scholarship with three semesters at Harvard-Yenching Institute. His dissertation – entitled ‘Guardians of the forest’: Local Knowledge and Environmental Policy in a Northern Thai National Park – highlights the ways an upland community responded to the Thai state’s ecological management program through developing new practices in the context of environmental constraints, and imbuing them with meanings that speak to both traditional and state-centered ideas about the environment. He is currently a lecturer at Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City.
