Fumika Sato is Associate Professor of Gender Studies at the Graduate School of Social Sciences, and steering committee member of the Center for Gender Research and Social Sciences, Hitotsubashi University. She grew up in Tokyo, and received her M.A. and Ph.D. from Keio University. She was the recipient of the Award for Young Scholars in Women’s Studies in 2002. In her Ph.D. thesis, she conducted sociological fieldwork at the Japan Self-Defense Forces and published it as Gender and the Military: Women in the Japanese Self-Defense Forces (in Japanese, 2004). Her research interests include militarism, feminism, and gender and the militaries. During her stay at HYI, she will be working on a project tilted “Comparative Studies in the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the U.S. Military from a Gender Perspective.”
