Tang Xiaobing is an Associate Professor from the History Department of East China Normal University, China. He obtained his B.A. (2001) in Journalism at Hunan University after which he moved to Shanghai to undertake history studies. He was awarded an M.A. (2006) and Ph.D. (2009) from the History Department of East China Normal University. During his Ph.D. study, he spent one year conducting research at the University of British Columbia. Tang’s research topics cover modern Chinese history, particularly focusing on the change and continuity of Chinese intellectuals’ thoughts and culture, and the development of Chinese journalism in the first half of the twentieth century. His studies also refer to the exploration of the collective memories of Chinese people in the twentieth century by discovering and utilizing relevant oral history and memoirs. Tang is the author of three Chinese books: Public Opinions in Modern China: The ‘Weekend’ Supplement of Ta kung Pao and ‘Free Talk’ Supplement of Shenbao (Social Sciences Academic Press, 2012), Intellectuals at the Crossroads (China Renmin University Press, 2013), and Encounters with Intellectuals in the Republican Period (SDX Joint Publishing Company, 2017). Currently, he is conducting a study of left-wing intellectuals’ thoughts, behaviors and activities in 1920s and 1930s China, which is aimed at revealing the subtle and complex relations between the exchange of left-wing culture in China and the later Communist revolution.
