About the book: This volume, with thirteen articles by scholars from Asia, Europe, and America, offers a comprehensive survey of the translations and publications of Western books in modern Hong Kong and Shanghai. They cover an array of understudied topics and examine the key issues from the perspectives of translators, translated works, publishing houses, and distribution networks, etc. These studies, individually and collectively, reveal a complex development of Western books in Hong Kong and Shanghai, two important centers for Sino-Western cultural exchanges from the late Qing period to the Republican period.
