Risa AIZAWA is a Ph.D. candidate in religious studies at the Graduate School of Arts and Letters, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan. Her doctoral research focuses on the construction of knowledge about religion by Dutch ethnologists during the colonial period and its impact on Indonesia after independence. She studies the history of the science of religion and that of anthropology in the Netherlands from late 19th century to early 20th century, paying attention to the relationship between them. She is also interested in the native anthropologist’s idea of religion in post-independent Indonesia, which has been influenced by Western religious studies.
