Wenyi Chen is an Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica. She received her B.A. and M.A. from the history department at National Taiwan University and Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. Her research focuses on how literati communities took shape and evolved in middle period China, especially in the Song (960-1276) and the Yuan (1206-1368). Her publications include a monograph on Southern Song academies and literati culture and articles examining important factors in the formation of a literati cultural order, including communication through network relationships, the use of frameworks like “local” and “dynastic” tradition in identity construction, and the social practice of several written genres. This year she is working on a revision of a book manuscript on literati responses to the Mongol Yuan regime and an ongoing study of books and knowledge production under the Yuan.
