Chulaluk Nakwattanaset is a Ph.D. candidate at the School of History, Nanjing University, China. Her Ph.D. dissertation focuses on overseas Chinese identity before 1932, focusing on the changing of ‘Chineseness’ depicted in newspapers both in Singapore and Siam. In April, she presented her paper about ‘Overseas Chinese Images in Thai Popular Culture’ at the Open University of Hong Kong. In July, she participated in ICAS II and presented her paper on ‘How the Western Missionary Press Influenced Modern Print Media in China and Siam’. During her Visiting Fellowship in the Asia-Pacific Historical and Contemporary Studies training program, she hopes to expand her knowledge in transitional history, media and public sphere history, and diaspora history in the Asia Pacific area.
