He Wenkai

Wenkai He is an Associate Professor in the Division of Social Science at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Political Science at MIT in 2007. From 2007-08, he was An Wang postdoctoral fellow at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University. His research interests include comparative historical analysis in social science, political economy of state formation, and the political and economic history of late imperial China. His book, Paths toward the Modern Fiscal State: England, Japan, and China (Harvard University Press, 2013) is the co-winner of the 2014 Barrington Moore Book Award from the Comparative and Historical Sociology section of the American Sociological Association. As a Radcliffe-Yenching Scholar​for the 2016-17 academic year, he will work on a comparative study of state formation in early modern England, Tokugawa Japan, and Qing China, focusing on how the early modern state legitimates state power through social policies.
