Heiko Narrog is Associate Professor at the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies of Tohoku University (Sendai, Japan). A native of Germany, he received PhDs in Japanese Studies from University of Bochum and in linguistics from Tokyo University. He is specializing in Japanese linguistics, particularly Japanese language history, language typology, and semantics. Recent publications include "Modality in Japanese: The layered structure of Clause and Hierarchies of Functional Categories" (Benjamins 2009; author), and "The Oxford Handbook of Linguistic Analysis" (Oxford University Press 2010; co-editor). His research at the Harvard-Yenching Institute will focus on the historical grammar of Japanese.
