Sheng-chih Lin received his Ph.D. degree from Kyoto University and is currently an Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica, and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Graduate Institute of Art History, National Taiwan University. His research concentrations are Chinese art history, focusing primarily on mortuary art of Early Medieval China (A.D. 220–589). In his first book, Image and Ornament: The Representation of Death in the Northern Dynasties (National Taiwan University Press, 2019, in Chinese), he examines a wide array of images in the tombs of the Northern dynasties, zooming in on materials from the Pingcheng period of the Northern Wei dynasty and the Sogdian tombs of the late Northern dynasties. He is currently investigating religious elements in the tombs of early medieval China in hopes of shedding new light on the period’s mortuary art.
