Liu Zhao obtained his B.A. in French Language and Literature from Sun Yat-sen University and an MPhil from the University of Hong Kong. Now he is a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at the University of Hong Kong. His main areas of research include historical sociology, political sociology, cultural sociology, sociology of art, and comparative studies in Asian societies. Now his research focuses on the invention of the revolutionary tradition and social transformations in modern China. Besides academics, he is also a professional pianist and an expert in Chinese tea culture. In 2012, he performed a sound installation Clair de Lune with English contemporary artist Kate Paterson in the Guangzhou Opera House.
