Miaoyan is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at Xiamen University. She received her B.A. in Sociology from Minzu University of China, her M.Phil. in Sociology from Peking University, and her Ph.D. in Education from the University of Hong Kong. Her academic training at Minzu University of China—China’s leading university for the education of ethnic minorities—nurtured her interest in ethnic minority issues in China. Her current research focuses on the sociology of ethnicity and the sociology of education, with particular attention to the intersections of educational mobility, ethnic identity, citizenship, academic achievement, and language policy concerning ethnic minorities in China. At HYI, she will carry out a project on the international mobility, cultural boundaries, and cosmopolitan consumption of Chinese students in the United States and Canada. She welcomes dialogue with faculty, students, and others with similar research interests.
