Zhang Yuanlin is a Research Fellow at the Dunhuang Research Academy and a full-time Research Fellow at the Institute of Dunhuang Studies at Lanzhou University. He was a guest researcher at Tokyo University of the Arts from 1997-1999. Since 2002, he has served as the department head of the Information Center for Dunhuang Studies at the Dunhuang Research Academy. He received his B.A. from Fudan University and his Ph.D. in History from Lanzhou University. Dr. Zhang’s research interests include Buddhist icons and icons of Dunhuang in relation to those along the Silk Road. His research currently focuses on the Lotus Sutra in the Dunhuang Grottoes. During his stay as a Coordinate Research Scholar, he will collaborate with Professor Eugene Wang (Department of History of Art and Architecture, Harvard University) on a research project entitled “Digital Visualization of Dunhuang Caves.”

Dr. Zhang’s publications include The Art of Dunhuang Grottoes, volume I (in Japanese, 2002), A Compendium of Mural Paintings at Dunhuang, Volume II ( Art of Western Wei, 2002). He is a contributing author to Dunhuang and City Cultures in the Sui and Tang Dynasties (2010), The Bibliography of the Grottoes in Gansu Province (2012), and Art History of Dunhuang Grottoes, Volume of the sixteen and Northern Dynasties (2014).
